Service of Process: Communication, usually by delivery of court papers, to a defendant which notifies them of a proceeding against them.
Statute: An act of the legislature adopted into law.
Structuring Conference: Usually the first court appearance in a civil case, the purpose of the structuring conference is to establish the calendar for the completion of the case.
Subpoena: An order issued by a court to compel a person to appear in front of the court and testify in a proceeding.
Superior Court: The highest level trial court of general jurisdiction in New Hampshire. The superior court has jurisdiction over all felonies, divorces, and civil cases involving larger claims, and has coincident jurisdiction with the district court over civil cases involving smaller claims.
Supreme Court: The highest court within the legal system, the Supreme Court is the appellate court for all other courts in the state.
Tenants in Common: Two or more co-owners of property who may or may not have equal ownership of the property, but are entitled to equal use and possession of the property. The property may be divided, sold or encumbered. No rights of survivorship as in joint tenancy.
Trial Management Conference: The trial management conference occurs just prior to the trial and its purpose is to review the procedure for the trial.
Trust: Real or personal property of one person held for the benefit of another person.
UCC: a code of laws governing various transactions including the sale of goods, banking transactions, secured transactions in personal property and other matters designed to bring uniformity between the states. All states, with the exception of Louisiana, have adopted some form of the UCC.
Writ: A court order compelling its named party to do something or informing them of the initiation of a lawsuit against them.
